THERAPIES - Chelation Therapy

WHAT IS CHELATION?

The process of chelation is a simple binding of a metal ion with a carrier molecule, which then is used to carry the metal ion out of the body. The most common type of chelation uses EDTA (Ethylene Diamine Tetracetic Acid) as the carrier molecule. This process is used to treat Atherosclerosis or "hardening of the arteries" which is the underlying problem in almost all heart disease, stroke, senility and circulation problems.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

EDTA is combined with a complex of vitamins and minerals in an IV bag and infused over a 3-hour period. The infusion of EDTA provokes several reactions. Ionized calcium is lowered in the bloodstream, causing the release of parathyroid hormone, which mobilizes calcium from metastatic soft tissue stores, such as the plaque in the artery walls, or calcium deposits in joints or bone spurs etc. This followed by a Calcitonin response, which is the opposing hormone to Parathyroid hormone and results in more Calcium being deposited in the bones. So chelation is effective in reducing Osteoporosis.

This process gradually over a series of treatments erodes away the plaque, opening up the blood vessel and improving circulation. Chelation also removes toxic heavy metals such as lead or arsenic, which can dramatically reduce free radical damage, which is now thought to be the main mechanism for aging and degenerative diseases. A Swiss study demonstrated a 90% reduction in cancer incidence after EDTA chelation.

WHAT CAN IT TREAT?

Due to it's profound effect on the circulatory system it can be used to treat a whole galaxy of conditions, including:

Heart disease - Angina pectoris, arrhythmias, High Blood pressure, Hypercholesterolemia, Coronary artery disease.

Brain Circulatory problems - Stroke, Transient ischaemic attacks, senility, dementia, memory problems, dizziness, Alzheimer's symptoms vision problems depression.

Peripheral Circulatory problems - Leg cramps, leg pigmentation, leg ulcers, thrombophlebitis, impotence, cold hands and feet,

HOW IS IT ADMINISTERED?

EDTA is administered as a slow drip intravenous infusion combined with a full spectrum of synergistic nutrients. Each treatment takes about three hours. Treatments are scheduled once or twice a week or at the most three times a week. The full course of treatments may vary depending on the severity of medical conditions but average about 30. Then the interval may be decreased to once a month, or the patient may be monitored and chelation with EDTA resumed on a 6 month or 12 month basis.

IS IT EFFECTIVE?

In about 85% of the cases there is a good to excellent result. An additional 10% show mild improvement, while 5% show no clinical evidence of improvement. However, it has been found that if patients take up to 50 treatments, approximately 98% will show excellent improvement while only 2% do not show the degree of improvement the doctor or patient would like to see.

IS IT SAFE?

In all medical procedures there is always the possibility of side effects, however the benefits so out weigh the possible side effects it is well worth the ever so slight danger. Perhaps this is in part due to the markedly low toxicity of EDTA, being only one fifth that of aspirin. The best proof of how safe a medical practice is by the number of malpractice suits brought against it. For four decades EDTA has been used on over 500,000 patients with more than 6,000,000 treatments. The Georgetown University Law School and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners failed to uncover any reported legal actions involving the use of chelation for atherosclerosis.

CardioVision

Before beginning Chelation Therapy blood tests are done to evaluate your overall medical condition, assess major organ systems and check nutrient status.

Our clinic has a CardioVision instrument which measures hardening of the arteries also referred to as arterial stiffness index. This tool gives a clear indication of the need for chelation therapy and can be used to monitor your progress and response to the treatment. Blood tests, although necessary to measure cholesterol and other risk factors, do not measure arteriosclerosis or hardening of the arteries directly whereas the CardioVision does.
