DIET THERAPY

We provide a variety of diet support, testing and individualized diet counselling. The blood type diet is a commonly recommended starting point for many patients.

The Blood Type Diet

WHO DEVELOPED THIS DIET?

Dr. Peter D'Adamo, a Naturopathic Physician, has brought the blood type diet to the forefront with his book Eat Right For Your Type. However Dr. D'Adamo's father, also a Naturopath, used this system first and even published a book One Man's Food Is Another Man's Poison. Peter, a gifted researcher, refined the approach further and used modern technical advances to verify the system. For more information see www.dadamo.com.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

There are 4 basic blood types. A and O are the two most common; each making up about 45% of the population. O is thought to be the oldest type and they do quite well with red meat, whereas type A's should avoid red meat and do better on more of a Vegetarian diet. B types make up about 7% of the population and AB is about 3%.

The basic premise of the diet is that foods contain lectins which are constituents in the food and which have a certain chemical structure. At the same time blood cells have branch chains, which also have certain chemical structures, and if these interact with each other it can result in unhealthy consequences such as coagulation or thickening of the blood. Other systemic effects of food lectins have been studied such as stimulation of excess mucous production in the gut, binding to kidney glomerular walls and insulin receptor sites and various other tissues.

The blood type diet is a system to rationally understand why some foods are good for one person but not for another. Using this approach we can confirm why we avoid certain foods, which just don't seem to agree with us.

Another blood factor that impacts the diet significantly is your Secretor/Nonsecretor status. Secretors secrete antibodies in tears, saliva and other body fluids. This has obvious immune implications and also affects the diet significantly. The more serious your health problems are, the more important it is to know your secretor status and the differences that makes on your diet.
